British Envoys to Germany – British Envoys to the Kaisereich

Markus Mösslang

The editorial series British Envoys to Germany, 1816-1866, and the ongoing project British Envoys to the Kaiserreich comprise a selection of diplomatic reports on Germany and Anglo-German relations. The project was initiated with the aim of shedding new light on British perceptions of German affairs and the states of the German Confederation, and thereby contributing to the historiography of nineteenth-century Anglo-German relations. As in the case of British Envoys to Germany, 1816-1866, British Envoys to the Kaiserreich will draw exclusively on official political correspondence sent to the Foreign Office from the diplomatic missions in Germany. From 1871 diplomats were stationed at the Berlin embassy as well as at the independent legations at Coburg, Darmstadt, Dresden, Munich and Stuttgart. The diplomatic reports not only reveal the heterogeneous British interests and changing perceptions but also undermine a Prusso-centric view of Germany.
