Seit seiner Gründung hat das DHI London Forschungen zur Geschichte des europäischen Imperialismus bzw. Kolonialismus betrieben und gefördert. Dieser Forschungsschwerpunkt ergibt sich fast zwangsläufig aus der Tatsache, dass London als Zentrum des British Empire für diese Thematik weltweit einer der zentralen Archivstandorte ist. Besonders im Hinblick auf die vom Wissenschaftsrat empfohlene Stärkung der Area-Studies an deutschen Universitäten ist dieser Forschungsschwerpunkt auch von wissenschaftspolitischer Bedeutung.

Die Institutsarbeit konzentriert sich zur Zeit besonders auf

• die vergleichende Geschichte der europäischen Imperialismen vom 18. bis in das 20. Jahrhundert
• die Geschichte der Dekolonisation und des Zerfalls von Reichen
• die vergleichende Geschichte von west- und osteuropäischen Weltreichen
• Wissen und Wissensproduktion im Kontext des Britischen Empire/Kolonialismus
• Fragen der (post)kolonialen Erinnerungskulturen und Geschichtspolitik und speziell der kolonialen Archäologie in Indien
• Biographieforschung im Kontext der Kolonialgeschichte
• den atlantischen Sklavenhandel und seine Abschaffung, sowie ihre politischen, wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Folgen für Afrika
