Professor Mervyn Heard presents genuine Victorian and Edwardian magic lantern shows featuring vintage moving slides, comical stories, sights, frights and optical surprises.

Magic lantern shows made it possible for Victorians, most of whom would never travel much beyond thirty miles of their own home in a lifetime, to see actual, real-life living pictures of places unheard and undreamt of. As popularity increased lantern slide manufacturers began producing songs and stories in lantern slide form, with ‘life-model’ slides featuring ordinary working people drawn from the community close by the slide-producing studio.

This magic lantern show is organised by Professor Mervyn Head and the Foundling Museum in association with the German Historical Institute London as part of their conference Screen Culture and the Social Question in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lasting approximately seventy minutes, the show will focus on nineteenth century social work and will be accompanied by piano music.
