Professor Janaki Nair

Janaki Nair (PhD Syracuse University, 1991) has worked in the field of modern Indian history, primarily, but not solely, with a focus on the region of Mysore/Karnataka. Her areas of interest in research and teaching include labour and urban history, legal history, feminism and women’s history, and visual cultures and traditions. Among the places where she has worked are: Colgate University, USA; Brown University, USA; Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai and the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata. She is currently at the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her recent publications include Mysore Modern: Rethinking the Region under Princely Rule (2011, University of Minnesota Press) and The Promise of the Metropolis (2005, Oxford University Press; winner of the New India Book Prize, 2005), as well as articles in Indian and International journals. She has held Visiting Professorships at the University of California, Berkeley, and at the University of Wurzburg, Germany.
