Professor Andreas Gestrich

German Historical Institute London

Andreas Gestrich (PhD Tübingen University, 1982) has worked in the fields of the social history of childhood, youth and the family in early modern and modern Europe, on German media history and the history of poverty, poor relief and the welfare state in Germany and Britain. His recent publications include (with E. Hurren and St. King, eds.), Poverty and Sickness in Modern Europe, 2012 and (with B. Althammer and J. Gründler, eds.), The Welfare State and the ‘Deviant Poor’ in Europe 1870-1933, Basingstoke 2014. He held academic positions at the universities of Tübingen, Stuttgart and Trier in Germany and Visiting Fellowships/ Professorships at the universities of Karlsruhe, Oxford Brookes and Würzburg. In 2006 he was appointed director of the German Historical Institute London, and has the overall responsibility for the Transnational Research Group towards its main funder, the Max Weber Foundation.
