Professor Geetha B. Nambissan

Geetha B. Nambissan is a sociologist of education. She is currently at the Zakir Husain Centre for Educational Studies (ZHCES), Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her research has focussed on exclusion, social justice (equity) and education with particular reference to the schooling of marginalised sections of Indian society – Dalits, Adivasis and the urban poor. Her current areas of interest are: private schools for the poor and education business; the family, strategies and practices in education. Geetha Nambissan has been involved in a number of collaborative projects within a comparative frame. In 2001-3 she was a partner in a study with IDS Sussex on Child Labour, Social Exclusion and Household Livelihoods: Meeting Children’s Interests in Situations of Inequality in India and Bangladesh (led by Professor Naila Kabeer, IDS). In 2006 she along with faculty from ZHCES and Institute of Education, London carried out a project on Education and Social Justice in the era of Globalization: Perspectives from India and the UK. Her recent publications include Education and Social Justice in the Era of Globalization, Routledge 2011 (co-edited) and Sociolgy of Education in India: Changing Contours and Emerging Concerns, Oxford University Press, 2013 (co-edited). She is currently President of the Comparative Education Society of India (CESI).
