5. Adult education and the popularisation of practical scientific knowledge
A further area in the field of schooling and education is the transmission of knowledge to adults. In this context, popularizing knowledge and science, not least in rural areas, acquires a special significance. The issue of transmitting (Western) knowledge was the subject of one session at a GHI conference on ‘Knowledge Production, Pedagogy, and Institutions in Colonial India’. The TRG expects to build on these findings and pursue the theme into the post-colonial period. The transmission of scientific knowledge to rural areas in the colonial and post-colonial period must be foregrounded, thus making a contribution to the development of infrastructures of knowledge. Education in the context of international development cooperation in the field of agriculture, for example, could play a part here. This topic has also a lot of potential for transnational comparison.
